Artistiad Ifainc Cymru / Young Welsh Artists 2023

Ross Andrews, a ceramic artist based in South Wales, graduated from Cardiff's School of Art and Design with a master's in ceramics and art research. His work combines mould-making, slip-casting, sculptural hand-building and digital processes, such as 3D printing, to produce large vessels or ornamental pieces of sculpture.

His attraction to architecture inspires Ross' work - the built environment - as well as material luxury or things of ceremony and ritual. This attraction could be explained by being a gay artist and having a queer or camp aesthetic. Although minimal in colour, his work is often either over-embellished or highly textured with the feeling of 'more is more'

This ceramic collection weaves a compelling narrative of queerness, although never explicitly; Ross' work displays elements of sensuality, power, humour, and subversion. For example, the work 'OVERABUNDANCE' embodies excess with bursting florals and an ivory satin cord hinting at indulgence and a sense of tension, containment, or restraint.

'KNOCKERS' playfully alludes to sensual performance, the enhancement of nipples through tassels, with the purpose of 'for show' and not for concealment. Whereas 'GLORIA' boldly explores religious opulence alongside anonymity, with a provocative nod to a gloryhole. Overall, this collection aims to challenge and invite viewers into material dialogue and narrative around this queer or camp aesthetic.
